listening

early yesterday morning we heard gunshots.
first a series of identical pops, and then a second, shorter series of pops.
a few minutes after that, there were screams coming from a couple houses down. i'm sure it was to do with the man who rings doorbells.
after that, the squealing of tires. i got up and looked down from my window to watch this white tank of a car drive hastily away.
thirty minutes later, a car door slammed shut, and the sound of gagging followed by some vomit slapping the sidewalk made its way up to my room.

i didn't look out the window that time.
